In the first racing season of 2014, Garrison Savannah will once again host the prestigious Sandy Lane Gold Cup.

Organised by the Barbados Turf Club, this historic event will take place on Saturday, 8th March, and, as expected, there is already a great deal of anticipation surrounding the occasion.

With ten races scheduled throughout the day, it’s advisable to arrive before midday to secure a good viewing spot. A carnival-like atmosphere builds steadily, reaching its peak in the late afternoon with the main event, typically held at around 4:30 p.m.

The 1,800-metre (9-furlong) race is the most prestigious horse racing event in the Caribbean, attracting horse owners and trainers from across the region and even the United States. With a total prize purse exceeding BBD $214,000 for this single race, it’s no wonder the event is such a significant highlight on the racing calendar.

Last year’s 2/1 favourite, Aristodemus — ridden by A. Trotman — claimed the first-place prize of BBD $120,000. With Aristodemus returning for this year’s event, there’s no doubt where my bet will be placed.

A Rich Heritage

The Sandy Lane Gold Cup was first run in 1982 and has since grown into an internationally recognised fixture. Sponsored by the luxurious Sandy Lane Hotel, one of Barbados’ most iconic resorts, the event combines glamour, sport, and tradition.

Many top horses from Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, the United States, and Canada have travelled to Barbados for their chance at victory on this revered turf.

Food, Drink & Entertainment

Food and drink stalls are located throughout the grounds, offering a variety of local Bajan cuisine — including flying fish sandwiches, macaroni pie, and rum punch. Live DJ sets and steel pan performances keep spirits high all day long.

A kids’ zone provides family-friendly fun, with pony rides, face painting, and games.

Getting There

Garrison Savannah is located just outside Bridgetown, the capital of Barbados. Limited parking is available on-site, so many attendees prefer to use shuttle services or taxi transport from hotels and resorts.

Public transport is also an option, with dedicated Gold Cup buses running from key points across the island.
